FIVE EYES OR FIVE TONGUES?

The Five Eyes countries: the American Republic, and the four main
British Kingdoms: the Australian Kingdom, the New Zealander
Kingdom, the Canadian Kingdom, and the United Kingdom.

Pearls and Irritations, a left-of-center Australian political blog, just published an article about the power wielded by state corporate news media in today's world, especially in the light of the current Gaza War.

What is written there is all fine, true, and well, but it carries no enough weight in front of the onslaught of press coverage carrying the same lines every hour, every day, every week. And the same holds true with the current Ukrainian War.

The Five Eyes don't just share information. They share ideas, reflexes, habits of thought, slogans, inclinations, biases, sentiments, opinions, mindsets, etc., all carried through the same medium: the English language. As everybody knows, that language has almost become the lingua franca of the whole planet, used on innumerable radio stations, TV stations, Internet outlets, etc.
The power of the English language media is remarkable. It is scary in its uniformity and frightening in its intensity. It often constitutes a barrage of apparent unanimity, the members of the English-speaking press using the words and modes of delivery employed by their respective politicians, whether Americans, Canadians, Australians, etc.
The Five-Eyes press is a weapon of mass destruction, mass dissemination, mass disinformation, and mass indoctrination. Everyone who was alive at the time of the 1980 référendum, and living inside the province of Québec, can be a witness to the power of that press, whose guns were the written words in magazines and newspapers, and, even more deadly, the spoken words on radios and TV sets.
Alternative viewpoints were and are disadvantaged by comparison, then as now, even when they used the same language. They're just drowned, underneath a torrent of English words, always the same, always repeating the same lines, always reflecting the same ways of thinking, always reiterating the same political orientations...

The Anglospherean countries should stop using the Five Eyes moniker and adopt this one: the Five Tongues, or perhaps more accurately the Five (Twisted) Tongues...
