America is not your friend, it is true, especially if you live in Canada, in Panama or in Greenland. If you live in the European Union, you will be surprised to read that Trumpian America is ready to take a bigger chunk of Europe than Russia with the Ukrainian War. Greenland has less population than Ukraine, granted, but it has a lot more territory. What will Denmark do? If the Marines land on a beach near Nuuk next month, will the Danes continue to send money and weapons to Kiev? When will the Europeans start to understand that the Americans are not there to help them, that they don't care that much about them? The Americans only need the European Union to keep the Russians away, while they concentrate against the only country that is powerful enough to push them out of the first place of the podium one day, China.

A growing part of the Republican party is giving credence and support to the Trumpian proposal of buying Greenland from Denmark. If that kind of nonsense still goes on after next week investiture, it may start to drive a wedge between the United States and the European Union, especially if it is combined with a series of new tariffs against Europe.

This is a very interesting article that shows the extent of Chinese investments in the Iraq economy, particularly the oil sector.

The US is still present in that country, mainly in the shape of military forces, that it refuses to evacuate despite the pleas of the Iraqi government.

At the same time, though, China is building a network of assets that will strengthen both the Iraqi economy and its own influence in that country.

C'est exactement le genre de choses qui peut finir par ébranler les Européens et les amener à se débarrasser de leurs illusions géopolitiques. Cela va aussi permettre aux Danois, incidemment, de comprendre ce que les Irakiens ont ressenti en 2003, lorsque les Américains avaient fabriqué une guerre de toutes pièces à l'aide de prétextes douteux. Au bout du compte, bien sûr, les chances que le Groenland soit réellement envahi par les Américains sont quasi-nulles. Reste que le sujet peut amener les Danois (et plus largement les Européens) à reconsidérer la nature des liens qui unissent les États-Unis et l'Europe continentale depuis 1945. Les Américains, depuis l'époque d'Obama, ont fait un choix stratégique: pivoter le focus de leur attention de l'Europe vers l'Asie. Cet important changement de perspective s'est accentué au cours des présidences suivantes, accompagné d'un malaise existentiel. Cet inconfort envers la Chine s'est développé au fur et à mesure que les États-Unis ont pris la mesure de l'ampleur des avancées faites par ce pays, sur les plans économique, technologique et militaire, ainsi que sa capacité à tisser patiemment des liens avec un certain nombre de puissances moyennes (BRICS, SCO) et avec la myriade de pays constituant le Sud global. L'Union européenne a suffisamment de poids démographique, de puissance économique et de force militaire pour ne pas avoir peur de la Russie. Elle n'a aucunement besoin de l'OTAN pour se prendre en main et organiser sa défense. Un jour viendra, probablement au cours du deuxième mandat de Donald Trump, où l'Europe continentale va prendre conscience que l'Amérique a bien plus besoin de l'OTAN qu'elle n'en a besoin elle-même. Du même coup, elle va aussi se rendre compte que la Chine n'est pas son ennemie mortelle mais une partenaire économique potentielle, tout comme les autres pays asiatiques.
