ERDOGAN: EU OR BRICS, NATO OR SCO?
A few days ago, a preliminary agreement was concluded by NATO and the EU, with Turkish leader Erdogan, for admitting Sweden inside NATO, against a bid to admission in the EU.
Did the Europeans take
Erdogan for some moron?
Is it a wonder he changes
his mind since the agreement made in Vilnius (Lithuania) a few days ago? What
kind of transaction is this: a hollow promise about a bid for an eventual entry
into the European Union, one day, sometime in the future, against Sweden's
immediate admission into the North Atlantic Treaty Organization?
Erdogan has a much better
chance of entering the BRICS economic association (made up of Brazil, Russia,
India, China and South Africa) than of ever entering the European Union, after
decades of waiting. And there, in the BRICS, he could realistically be expert
to be warmly welcome, as opposed to continue being coldly snubbed by Europeans
as he wait and wait for them to open the golden doors.
As for NATO, its future remains
dubious. If the Republicans field a good enough candidate in the next US
presidential campaign, and finally win back the White House, they may well
decide to put the axe themselves to that obsolete and expensive entity in
search of a raison d'être.
On this matter, time is not
of the essence. Everybody's waiting for the conclusion of the Ukrainian War.
The end of that conflict, and the negotiations that will ensue, and the
resultant changes in alliances and prospects, are bound to have many
repercussions upon the course of world events. Meanwhile, on the front, Russia
is continuing to play a waiting game, letting Ukraine bleed and lose slowly all
her punch, while China continues building its Afro-Eurasian sphere of
influence, country by country.
In the end, for Turkey, it
would probably boil down to this: Erdogan will choose what he thinks will be
the best eventuality in the long term, for the country he led, whether it is
inside the North Atlantic Treaty Organization or inside the Shanghai
Cooperation Organization, and also whether it is inside the EU or inside the
BRICS...
Qui vivra verra.
